Hey, guys! First post (f/18) and I wanted to know, does the phrase "tying the knot" for marriage come from "tying the knot" in canine sex? Just curious about the origins of that phrase (it hit me all at once, like an apiffany) and I looked on the web, but could find no mention. I figured you all would know. PS, are cat lovers okay here? (I don't practice anything, just love her!)

actually "tying the knot" as a marriage reference has more to do with very very very old catholic marriage rituals. During these weddings the priest would take a special small sash and use it to lightly tie the held hands of the bride and groom together. If you ever catch a look of the movie Excalibur, you get to see this during the wedding scene between Arthur and Gwenevere. The fact that dogs "tie the knot" is just a happy coincidence.

energydog, you should be on Jeopardy, dude.I'd always suspected it had something to do with the Gordian Knot, or maybe Orthodox Judaism, which also has several rope/knotting/tying traditions. You learn something every day.
