Hello everybody. Those of you from the old forum will know that I posted a message there about suggestions of how I could convince my mom to allow me to keep my dog as she is and not get her spayed. My mom believes that spaying is the only way to go. Sydney, my doggy (the little one in my avatar) is the one that I want to keep from being spayed. I don't believe in spaying. I feel that it is wrong. Well tonight I am happy to report to all of you that she will not be spayed. The decision was left in my hands. There wasn't even an argument over it. I told all of you that I would let you know as soon as I had the conversation so here it is she will not be spayed. I am very happy and I thank all of you for your help. I do have another question now and that is what am I to expect. When will she first come into heat and how long does it last. She is a German Shepherd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Thats GREAT news! My mom wanted to get my Rottweiler Neutered... I actually couldn't sleep some nights, thinking about 'what if' I woke up, and it had already been done... I love him very much, and agree, I think its wrong... Both Spaying and Neutering...It was a great relief when I came out to her about my different kind of lifestyle... And she accepted it, So I don't have to worry about it happenin with him... Once again, Thats great news to hear, I'm happy for you and Sydney!Ttyl,WolfGuy

First heat depends on many things, breed, breeding, and individual maturity and hormonal levels. With a German Shepard, the first heat can be anywhere from 5-6 months old to a year old. Actual maturity may be 2 years or even later.First heats (up to the first two years of maturing/ maturity) may last only a few days or may last weeks before the bitches body adjusts to a regular cycle. They may also be more frequent than the twice a year expected in a mature bitch.Things tto remember as basic guidelines: The larger the breed or dog, the later the maturity (and the shorter the lifespan).Once your bitch has matured into a regular heat cycle, ANY DEVIATION from that cycle is cause for immediate concern and a trip to the vets. Soda water is the only adequate stain remover for vaginal drippings on fabric. (and only when its a "fresh" stain)

eer... What is spayed? Is that when you castrate a female dog?(Can't find it in lexicon)

QUOTE (SwedishWolfie @ Mar 14 2004, 09:14 AM) eer... What is spayed? Spaying: a surgery when the vet cuts off the ovaries, the womb and a part of the vagina. In my knowledge this prevents any further sexual contact with the dog in most cases....

The words (and actions as Bitchfool said) are different for males and females.Females get 'spayed' (female sex organs removed)Males get 'neutered' (also known as being 'castrated') - (where the male organs [balls] are removed)The actions have the same effect - removal of the capability to have little dogs

Lets call it like it is (not sure who said it but it stood in my mind as IMHO it fits)Butchering...And please dont turn this thread into a debate about the pros and contras of spaying - create a new one if you like...

Agree very much with that. Butchering is wrong.

Dearest ---2--- (and Sydney),Perhaps I should save my remarks for our regular private communications, but I want to express my joy for you and your baby publicly. You know what you mean to me, and that it was Sydney that brought me to you in the first place. It was Wendy, I think, that said something like:Standing in the middle of the room with you, jumping up and down and around in circles with joy for both of you....So right she is!Sydney is beautiful; I wish the two of you a long life of Love and fun together (Summer's coming; get ready for those camping trips together....).Joy to both of you (and quiet thanks to your mom for not putting up a fight....).Doglet"A Dog wags its tail with its heart." - Martin Buxbaum
