Poor woman. Though this is incredibly rare. The bacteria responsible usually only causes problems in people with immune issues and usually it is very easy to treat with antibiotics if identified early.

Quite a story...My sympathies go out to the Folks who were left behind.Looks like the LADY got left behind on this one, herself, because the school district wouldn't allow the leave-donations...got to wonder if there wasn't a judgement made there, quietly, about what MIGHT have caused this woman to contract a k-9 oriented disease.... ( policies are made to be broken in just such circumstances as these)...when in all likelihood, the immuno-suppressants she was undoubtedly on for her cancer were the prime cause. " Hard-hearted Hannah" hailed from the right place after all...

btw, y'all, the 'Hard-hearted Hannah' referred to is a gal in a song, 'from Savannah, Ga..' and not a reference to the lady in this report

Stuff like this is why you should brush your dog's teeth on a regular basis.

yep...we like to think its all harmless, but under certain conditions, even a cotton ball could kill...and this unfortunate was probably just very unlucky...

What the heck . . . .Someone asked about possible allergic reactions not long ago in General Forum, and even though it may actually be a separate concern, I figure it might not hurt to link from here to the "Allergic Response to Intimate Interspecies Contact" thread on the Howto's, FAQ's, and Technical Help Board. And a friendly reminder -- read news reports critically. Good reporters won't ever be "out to gitchya", but a lot of what's reported at "news" isn't properly investigated to begin with, especially by TV stations and networks, who are in the business of delivering audiences to advertisers, not the business of gathering and disseminating news. Cheers,Shiny

Yes Shiny,,,that IS a separate thing...I'm sure msDeelight has seen this, but it wasn't an allergy that killed this woman...and that MUST remain clear for the sake of the forum users...This was a bacterial infection....an atypical zoonotic disease...probably contracted with the assistance of immuno-suppressants....and thus distinct from an allergic reaction...either can kill, but prevention and treatments are different...In sofar as reportage is concerned, we have no control over that. We CAN control what we post in our forum...so that the next gen of zoos has better information than we had when we first came here.

For the group in the chat, Including Miz Kitkathat, who actually ASKED the question:The Capnocytophaga bacteria Information I have comes from a website called "rightdiagnosis", which is the source of this quote:Capnocytophaga: A bacterial infection caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus which is often found in normal healthy cats and dogs. The infections tends to occur mainly in immunocompromised patients, alcoholics or patients who have chronic respiratory disease or have had their spleen removed. The eyes are particularly sensitive to this infection. The incubation period can be as long as eight days. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Capnocytophaga is available below. Note that a serious point of entry is EYES...and remember that a LOT of larger dogs have "sloppy chops" and shake drool all over the place...Bodily fluids are not all alike but deliberately encouraging "facials" isn't a good thing...Yeah, I know this is a downer, y'all, but knowledge IS power, after all...

QUOTE (saddlebum66 @ Sep 21 2012, 10:47 PM) I just mean that the bacterium is relatively prevalent and everyday how many hundreds of thousands of people get licked by there dog. Suddenly getting worried about your dog licking you is like not driving a car on the road because a truck might crash into you.Is good to be aware it can exist but not worth letting it become some fear factor.

Given the new ascendance of the diseases that require immuno-suppressant therapies, it seems important that this be here, and that it not be downplayed... if I err, I'd rather it be on the side of too much info than of not enough.

Oh yeah it is definitely useful information if you are on some kind of immune suppressant meds.
