AGESYouth, you ran and played with me.Chasing your ball, romping happily through the fields.Eyes bright, ears cockedand beating a cresendo with your tail.A puppy to the core,a joy to my heart.Growing,You played less, worked more.Always ready to do as I’d ask, head up and tail straight, waiting my commands.Yet, with an eye ever on meshould I pick up your ball.A puppy yet.Age,I watch you slow. You’re stiff mornings now.Your laughing bark rings less oftento my ear.The bright brown eyes are cloudy now,the ears and tail hang low.Still you listen for my voice.Your tail thumps, you nuzzle me,holding your ball.A puppy still at heart.I rolled your ball today. With effort, you raised your head.A paw on your ball, you whimpered.I’ll not ask you to play today, and I’ll hold you as you go.I owe you that. And at the end,the clouds part, the bright eyes are there. You nudge your ball, lick my hand.I try not to cry, knowing. You are my puppy, forever.silverwolf
