The puppy on the right in my avatar was fostered by me for a month. I never really found out what type of dog she is! People are telling me shepherd mix but I doubt it.

Everything with a black muzzle gets called a "shepherd mix." Once you get into second-generation mixes, there's really no telling. There are some DNA tests that can give you a decent guess anyway. For scale, is the other dog a Collie or a Sheltie?

Sheltie, they're not related though...?

Pretty close to impossible to be sure as she is young and dogs coloring often change with age, While Shepherds throw black muzzeling so to do Malinois - Turves as can, in theory, any predominatly black coated dog as black ids a dominate color. You don't give an age on the pup but she is proportioned as in a young dog of 4 to 7 minths (her feet don't fit the body size) As her muzzek is about 3.5 inches long (comparing it to the 4" wide floor planks) - 4" being the norm for planking she is going to be around a 50 lb dog at maturity. That can allow that she may be part shepherd but if she is 2nd generation mix - hard to tell. The DNA test to determine a breed are largely a hoax with their accuracy being limited at best. They rely on genitic markers like those that indicate blue eyes will get you a husky mis and those that indicate black muzzeles will get you a shepherd mix but it is mostly guessing - same as most shelters guess and I often laugh at what some people are told their dogs when it does not even remotly resemble any of the breed traits. The AKC simply lumps all mixed breeds as All americans with no distinction of what is in their makeup!

*Bassett* ---- "Shepard mix"*Dane* -----"Shepard mix"*English bulldog* ----- "Shepard mix"Generic one-size-fits-all label for any shelter that has no clue....... Personally, I'm going with a Rhodesian Ridgeback/ shorthair Chihuahua sort of thing....

Knowing her age at the time of pic might help. The drop ears look a bit like rohedeasion ears (end in a point) and her shoulders are still very loose indicating she was quite young in the pic - the long ungainly looking legs still suggest a dog in the 50 lb range at maturity

I would say Rhodesian Ridgeback too. Do you remember if he had this ridge on his back? That would give a clue He might be too short haired to be a Belgian Shepherd (Mechelen/Malines). btw, is the other dog really a sheltie instead of a collie? It might be the angle of the photo, but his head seems so much bigger than the head of my (late) sheltie, who was already big for his breed.Lovely pic though.

I'm thinking I can see a bit of the ridge in the avi. pic.BTW, the "ridge" is a rather odd line of hair down the spine that grows pointing forward instead of backward like the rest of the coat. Where the hair pointing in opposite directions meet, it makes a ridge down the spine.
