I volunteer as a foster parent for puppies, I took all of them into my care while they were 2-3 months old. I have individually raised each one for a month before they found a new home. If I were to cross paths with any of them at the park or somewhere else.... Do you think they would remember me? All of them were scared and sick and hungry when they first came through my doors. A few hours later I became the first human they have ever trusted and loved. It's been a few years and I was just wondering if any of them might remember me...

The pup on the right in my avatar is one of them. She is all grown up and her new family has invited me to go and visit her. It would be pretty awkward if she ignored me or forgot about me...

It's hard to say. some dogs do and some don't. Just greet her like you would any other dog and see what happens. If nothing else, dogs are very good at spotting dog-friendly people.LTD

Depends how much time you spend with him.

24/7 for one whole month for each dog. Since they were all cute pups and young, I was aloud to bring them to work. If I had to drive anywhere they came with me.

A month is not really long enough to build a bond that will stand the test of time. Some dogs will build a bond that will endure for years of seperation ( I have had this happen) years ago I had to part with my first heart dog (the one that lives in your heart) and she stayed with a freind for three years before we could be reunited but she never once seemed to have forgotten me. She was pre my zoo interest but we did spend the better part of 15 years sleeping on the same bed. Our bond was so tight that even though I was 10 miles away from her at work when she died I knew the minute she left this world - I felt her leave!. Another was one of my mothers dogs that thought I hung the moon and she was out on a show circuit with an agent for over a year when I went to meet him to bring her home. She did not see me come into the room from the pen she was in but when I called out her "pet name that only I used" she was all but flying trying to find me - there was never more than six pounds of her but she was a very sweet girl! MEME and Tess have been gone for over 20 years now but I still miss both of them.

I could understand that a month with a young pup might not be much... But my first ever dog spent a year with me before I enlisted in the army. The day I came home he actually didn't recognize me when I came through the door by sight. He sure remembered my voice and smell. Sucks that he had to go.

I can think of several reports where the dog did not remember/ recognize an owner after just hours. Someone came home and was different " added or lost clothing", drunk, had been with opposite sex etc and the dog did not recognize the owner.

Hmm. I see. But if I had a balaclava on I wouldn't blame my dog for not recognizing me. But the drunk thing is interesting...

Hey Dogs never forget those who Loved them, why do you think Police train them, as Guard Dogs or sniffer dogs, we had a German Shepherd, and we only had her for about two months to help rear her, and she was gone, and one day some years later about 7 years later, the people who took her were going over seas and rang and asked us if we would look after her till they returned, when they brought her to the Farm and let her off the Lead, she made a bee line down to the back lane way and along to Kennel 15, Why because thats the Kennel she was Born in, and thats where I used to play and love her and the rest of her brothers and sisters, they have great memories and Bondings God Bless them, love from Lauren xxxxxxxxxxxxx with them all.

Humans don't seem to remember anything from their early years. Maybe the same thing applies to dogs?

My sisters dogs always remember me. I play with them and the kids. If I stay over i have a dog on each side of me. Sucks being trapped under a blanket.

Well I don't like to be a wet rag. But it does not sound like you fostered them for that long a period of time. They may remember you, they may not. Dogs are famous for their tenacious loyalty often for years without seeing that person. But that is usually for bonds formed when the dog is older and their brain structure a bit more matured. Young puppies will try to form relationships at the drop of a hat. So I would not be surprised if they do not remember you many months or years later. This is not to say they might. They may remember you well, but I think it more likely they'll only have vague memories at best. So if it doesn't seem she quite remembers you don't be disappointed. Its not a reflection on how you raised him/her its merely a reflection on a young juvenile's ability to form clear memories that's all. Or let me give you an example. Are you more like to clear memories of experiences and people you've met when you had those experiences as an adult or a very young child? Childhood impressions are often vague sensory laden memories at best. Versus adult memories which are loaded with clear emotions and pinpoint physical details.

Ooh I finally got to see her! At first she was very cautious and a little shy and then she started to freak out and jump all over me! It turns out that she never really did that to strangers while in her new home. She may have been real young, but as soon as she was in her new home, she showed signs of seperation anxiety. Maybe we did share a strong enoughbond?

Glad this worked out well. As energydog said some memories we (dog and human alike) made in our youth are very strong and do stay with us our entire lives (although some details may not be as clear as the ones made in similar situations made in our adult years) and other memories fade within hours of the removal of the stimulus that made them

yeah it's possible that dogs can forget who you are but it depends on how much time you spent with them and how young they were.

I was separated from my girl before i got to take her away from her nasty owners. I spent many nights with her and loved more than any human would. When she was taken away i was heart broken and I'm sure she was too. a year went by an I got a call from the owners and they finally wanted to sell her to me. When I finally reunited with her she jumped in my arms and was so excited to see me. She is 3 years old now so I dont know if such young ens one would remember, but anything is possible. I hope one day one of them gets to see the person that helped raise them
