I. Love. This. Class.I came in, expecting to have to defend, play devils advocate. I expected to find a lot of my own likes and habits to be criticized and condemned. I was wrong. My professor is amazing. He told us in the very beginning that if we are interested in telling the class why a particular practice is wrong and horrible, then we should leave the class. The class is meant to discuss WHY things are considered deviant by society, what that says about society, as well as just to educate ourselves on the history, types, and theories of social deviance. I kinda said "Yeah right" and waited for the firestorm of "We hate difference, and this is wrong."It did not come.Today, we actually went over a VERY taboo subject that is still slightly taboo on this forum. I will not go into what exactly it was, but the conversation went as follows.Student: this behavior is considered wrong by society because A.B.C.Teacher: But that doesn't always happens. What if it's in a much less extreme case? What if there is no harm done. Is it still deviant?Students: Yes.Teacher: Why?Students: Because society looks down on it.Teacher: Why?Students:...well....because...uh...it's weird and....gross...and...it just is.The fact is my teacher made students realize that a certain deviant behavior is only frowned upon because of preconceived social norms, NO logic. I was tickled to death! We also discussed extreme body modification including "Stalking Cat" for those who know who he is. We even mentioned people who split their *cough* genitalia. I said I "Knew" someone who had done that, but gave no detail or info other than what it looked like (Split-glans, do not fear. No names or affiliations were mentioned) We also discussed entire body tattoos, stripping, etc.And today I learn that we will be discussing Zoophilia in the near future.I curbed my excitement, but yeah. I'm so pumped. He also said that someone should probably do a research report on it and present it to the class at the end of the year. Guess who is going to do it? A lot of people know I am on this forum, though they think it is for different reasons. And frankly, none are my close friends. Still, I am excited. Also, I will get to do a school survey on zoophilia. I know for a fact that there are 4 people on campus who have admitted to me to be zoophiles. There may be more. Considering there are about 450 students on campus, that should raise a few eyebrows. I wish you were all in this class with me. It is entirely fascinating. I think of you all whenever I am in there, imagining what you might say, and what you'd be laughing at quietly to yourself. So, anything I should include in my report? Thoughts? etc? I may want to interview people, either that I know, maybe on here(All confidential) or take a poll or something. Basically, I get to, through my school do research on zoophilia!Thoughts?

I'd LOVE to be there with you; hopefully you can be our proxy and keep us who can't attend informed. We'd hang on every detail. Do remain cautious, tho'. Academics often get published. Just think ahead......
That is very good to hear and thanks for sharing that with us cheeseyness. It is really nice to either participate or observe a debate/conversation over what would normally be heated issues with someone who is capable of detatching their own particular beliefs. I recall a number of group conversations when I was back in school and I have sat in a number of lectures recently where students got involved about issues outside what is socially acceptable. Sounds like you are in a great class! As far as the research goes I would recommend looking into some of the academic works that have already been done on the subject namely Hani Miletski's Understanding Bestiality and Zoophilia. There are also a lot of other papers and essays that have been written, all are worth a read. As a zoo yourself you are, I would imagine, in a good position to do such a study as there are a lot of aspects you already understand which will undoubtedly allow you to cut through the crap easier. Though nothing comes to my mind immediately I would very strongly suggest that instead of copying the established set of rules as far as academic studies on this subject have gone that you take a somehow different approach. Also you will need to come to grips with something I personally found disapointing with the first few academic papers I read, they are very cold and sterile... Wish you the best of luck and if there is anything in particular that I can think of I will be sure to make another post and let you know. I am sure many here will be more then willing to help.
Psh, if it did get published, I'd probably be happy. Not NEARLY enough research has been done on the subject, and a little more can't hurt.

I would not mind being a fly on the wall during the discussion.
Cheesyness that is great news. Sounds like you've got a great class there. And a good chance to provide some good information on the zoo lifestyle. Am very jealous that you know zoo's on campus. Where I am studying I don't think anyone would dare tell if they were. Is one reason I want a zeta pendant or badge so much. Discreet enough to not be obvious but pretty obvious to those who are zoo's.
Strangely, these people I just had "feelings" about, like I was suspicious. So I told them I was, and lo and behold, THEY were! It was kinda cool.
It sounds like you have a really good professor. He reminds me of the one I had when I took a similar class years ago.You are fortunate to be able to conduct research on zoophilia under this rubric. Please let us know what we can do to help.LTD

I have my suspicions am just not in a situation I can risk telling. If I was doing a different type of course I would but theres just no way am taking the chance.

*raises hand excitedly* Ooh! Ooh! Interview me! This class sounds quite awesome, to me. We need more people to take a class that teaches this subject. If everyone learned it, discrimination would be a thing of the past. I can't really think of anything to suggest that wouldn't be obvious to begin with. I mean, I can think of all the basics to cover, but not much else.I wish I could be there, too. Best of luck with the report, too.
Social Deviance Class!??? Wow, never heard of a class on such a topic but sounds pretty damn cool! lol Something tells me that your professor and others in your class will be very open minded folks so I dare say there may well be more than 4 zoos on your campus!
Reminds me of Philosophy class. I LOVED philosophy class.
Katelyn, its actually a sociology class, but psych and soc, always go hand in hand in my humble opinion.

boy I wish the college around here offered a class like that! It would be so nice not to mention extremely cool since I know some people that are open minded (not as open as us but close )
OMG THATS SOOOO AWESOM!. I kinda of have an idea. I like what you said about polls and interviews. I would say look at the polls that we alread have here on basic zoo questions. and maybe interview 20 ppl 10 females 10 males and get personal answers to those basics questions. come up with something out of that i would love to help out anyway i can im sure me and my guy would love to.
That's just awesome I wish I was in a class like that. Share my two cents with the world.Good luck and as others have said, if theres any way I can help I'll be more then happy to

Thank you horndawg, I will keep you in mind.
As others have said if you want info then i'm happy to talk and answer any questions as well. Especially if you would like to hear from someone from a country where not only is bestaility illegal but so is ownership of films and photos depicting it. Also a random suggestion maybe it could be interesting to see if the laws in place worldwide have any effect other than to villify innocent people.

Haha, I'll have to make a list of who is willing to be involved. I really want to get all the info I can to best present what zoophilia is all about and what makes it "deviant." I also want numbers testimonial, history, etc. It's quite a project, but maybe it'll turn some heads. Who knows?
Well definitely count me in. I'd love to be involved in some way.
And, you are aware, that once the zoophilia subject does come up in your class, we will be needing a full report here of what all was discussed [I'll bet they will cite a few world wide known cases, when it does?].. Are you hoping you can show a few videos as long as they don't get you arrested on a obscenity charge] Cow_Poke
No videos needed. I don't think I need to show porn in class to make my points or educate.
There was a study publicized recently. People who have a low threshold for disgust, and are easily repulsed by things, tend to be socially conservative. People who don't mind getting a little dirt on their hands tend to be liberal. I wonder if this will come up in class? It would be interesting to learn what is the actual definition of deviancy, what is the origin of the social/community definitions, what limits are rationally justified and what are not?Suddenly it's very topical. Homosexuality is a deviancy in the military culture. Why is it so threatening? No one can seriously believe a gay soldier is going to jump your ass in the middle of a battle.
Count me in as well, if you need anyone to interview or need another participant in a survey or what not. I have participated in 3 college studies, and such in the past, and would love to help out a fellow member if needed.
Count us in.We would want to be anonomised (Is that a word?) but will give full and truthful answers.Mykel & p
Good luck, you MAY need it!! Keep us posted!! himfella
Deviant? I never thought I was deviant. I just feel funloving.
sounds like my kinde of class
My professor has agreed to let me tape some of the lecture next week and put it online somewhere.Hooray! Now you CAN be in class with me sorta!

Sounds like an awesome class, Cheesey. I'm pretty jealous! Like I said to you before, there is no way anyone would teach a class like that at my University... not in THIS state. I'd like to help too, if you want.

That's good news, to me. I certainly wouldn't mind hearing the lecture, and since the subject is actually interesting, I won't fall asleep. Again, I would be more than happy to help with this bit of research.
I would love to be part of this, lol! This sounds awesome.. I can't wait to see some of the class either
QUOTE (cheeseyness @ Feb 4 2010, 09:27 AM)My professor has agreed to let me tape some of the lecture next week and put it online somewhere.Hooray! Now you CAN be in class with me sorta! SWEET!!! I wish I could be in the class with you, it sounds like a lot of fun. I think it's cool that the professor started out by warning students that the class was going to explore why things that are considered "wrong" are considered wrong... That's the kind of thing I like to ponder when I'm feeling introspective... Good luck with the report/project thingy!
I have recorded one of the lessons. Will record again tomorrow. It needs some editing, however, as some topics discussed are taboo on the site. But I will get it up asap.

Sounds like an interesting class. Wish I could take part in it. It's similar to a class i took back in college where we had to come up with an unbiased definition of a hero.I look forward to hearing about it, and thank you for taking the time to share about it here.
I'm looking foward about this too! I can't wait to see what questions they ask.Man! I really wish the college around here had it oops... sorry about repeating myself WOO! 50th post lol
Ok, some news: My teacher actually would like to help me get approval and conduct some studies and research on Zoophilia to present a few years down the road. HOORAY! More on that when I know it.Also, as I promised, here's a recording from class, just a 5 minute sound bite. I'll add more soon. This one is called "Significant Others" and I apologize for the white noise, strange volume issues, etc. It's the best I can do. Please enjoy! Glad to have you in class with me. P.S. Let me know if it does not work!

Another one, this one is about "Labeling theory," and is much shorter.
This one is still not that long, and is about "Stigma."You can hear me talking in this clip, defining stigma, lol.
Ok, and another! More like 2 minutes this time, on one of my favorite concepts: "The Looking-Glass Self". In this, the word child is used. I must stress that this is speaking ONLY of which order you were born in in your family. NO underage references are being used.

I think this is the last for just now. I have more, but don't want to overload you all. I'm sure you can already tell where and how this relates to Zoophilia, so PLEASE feel free to discuss the material. Anyway, here's stuff about "The World of Deviance and Labeling" as well as anecdotes about Welfare Wednesdays and other such off topic discussions. 8 minutes of it. Hope that works for ya.I hope you've liked these so far.
Have listened to the first four so far and am on the 5th one now. Quite interesting. Sociology and psychology isn't usually something that interests me much but this is closer to the parts of this type of thing that interests me. Thanks again for uploading these Cheesey. Someone who speaks at a few points in the 5th one sounds just like someone who goes to my university. And very funny listening to the lecturer describing a previous student. The not turning up to lectures then hoping to pass the final happens so so much where i'm studying.
Psychology and sociology are things I really like but I hate that stereotypical rigid schooling bullshit on it. This is more my kind of thing too. I've actually had a class with her professor before and I really wanted to take this Deviance class he was teaching, but I couldn't put it in my schedule. Still, I sit in from time to time and would like to help out with this research too. Be sure you let the Prof. know that i'm interested.
Wow...This is awesome! Things like this usually bore me to tears, but in this case, I can't help being captivated. This is definitely the kind of class I wouldn't mind taking. Thanks a million for uploading these!BTW... I couldn't get them to work on Windows Media Player, but they work perfectly on VLC.
Works fine on Safari too.......*Takes WMP out behind the barn and shoots it*Going to need some Private Time, tho'.Awesome, Cheesey!

Glad you all like it! I'm adding another, just under 5 minutes about "Social Conflict Theory." I will add one more right now, then I'm stopping for the day, I think. The last one I am uploading has some amazing points to it.

The last one is called "Law" and you can guess what it is about. Also...some comments about drugs, cel phones, and race.Glad you enjoyed these. If you want to talk with me or other about anything you've heard, or ask questions (I can pass them on to my teacher) Please post here!

great topic))add me to the list of ones willing to be part of a survey(as long as we remain aynomaus) (sp)

This does sound like a very interesting course and the professor seems quite open minded. I only got to take psyc 101 in JR college and enjoyed it imensly (FWIW I outscored my mother who took it with me and she carried a 3.9 GPA!) My GPA was noticably lower but that is a different story. I will have to inquire wheather my daughter had a class like this as she has a minor in Sociology Many thanks for sharing this Cheesy!
Thanks Cheese. Sounds like you'll be getting a rather nice grade in this.I imagine that quite a few of us would have some choice things to reveal to those in a social deviance class. Oh, the fun it could be...
Going to class today. No recording, but I still have plenty more to post here.

Ok, so, in a few weeks we're going to be conducting a series of polls on this subject. I am excited, and I LOVE this class and my teacher.

I would gladly answer any questions you might have for reaserch. Along with some other taboo things that I won't mention on here. Just send me a pm, it does sound like a really fun class.

It's indeed a great discussion, maybe, just maybe, the seeds of a new age. However...I wouldn't hold my breath. Human morality and ethics are, in the end, just a big pile of outdated baggage we carry around. Most of it has no reason of being in a world on the verge of so called 'technological singularity'.Yet the vast majority will just keep doing what they were told to, including regarding zoo as an abomination for no good reason.Don't be fooled by the seemingly open atmosphere. When the class ends, real life kicks in again.Advice may be moot but I would keep noncommital, at least not showing too much excitement, and certainly not going to the point they can guess you are into zoo. That said... what a wonderful world this one could be. The class is great, your teacher is right. "Is that so? Why? Why? Why?"People rarely if ever come up with a good reply.PS looking forward to those polls.
PAPER TIME!And this is where you come in! I could use some help!Ok, so I will be doing interviews today. I need to interview Zoos who live in the United states, just to talk to them some on zoophilia. I will be on all day, seriously, just at my computer, so please drop me a pm and we can do a little back and forth. You will be quoted only by your screen name, no worries.Who would like to help me? I'm here, shoot me a PM!I'll put up a poll in this section I think.

OH, and I will need your consent to use anything you say in the paper. Seriously, I'm here all day. PM me!
Ok, info collected, in the process of paper writing. This will be a draft, to be expanded on MUCH more later. I'll post it here tomorrow sometime.
I am sorry I did not get back to you but with a broken right hand i type very slow and bad and I do owe you one i am sorry
It's ok dude, you're still cool with me. Also, I have plenty of info, no worries.

I can't wait my birthday is Tomorrow so I am excited to read the draft and see how it goes over. Sad it took me so long to find this thread I would've loved to get interviewed
WOOO! Draft of essay is done! A friend of mine will also post hers. Mine is pretty rough....
Well, I didn't see this post until now, but I think one part worth mentioning, if you haven't already, is the actual compatibility of an animal/human relationship. Sure they have many things in common like pleasure from sexual activity, playing, exploring, affection, etc... things that make us compatible companions. However, there are things missing as well... speech, complex thought, independence, offspring, and in our society a dog cant go everywhere you can... shopping, restaurants, etc. Perhaps the human is the one mostly shortchanged and perhaps in a different society they would be more compatible, but if one partner isn't fulfilled, both probably aren't... and knowing that, is it wrong? Are you using the animal until you find a human partner? What if your partner is not a zoo? That topic could obviously be expanded and explored, something I have put off.
UPDATE!!!Here's part one of two of the final presentation my partner in class and I did for our final. We received A's for this and the comment that it was one of the best presentations in class because we managed to remain neutral and seem neither an advocate for or against the subject. Based on the response I got, I'm pretty sure some people knew I wasn't just neutral. (See end note of lecture)PLEASE pay special attention to the warning at the beginning and note at the end. I look forward to comments. Thanks, and enjoy.
part two of two. I hope this works out, and has been worth a little wait. Thanks for listening to us!

A 10 for doing that, it took real guts to do.Would that such topics being discussed this openly in classes around the world was the norm.
btw, recordings of lecture are on the previous page!!
Shucks...End of March was when I didn't have internet. That's why I missed you. Ahh, well. I look forward to seeing the presentations...I'll download them at a time when my brother isn't home. Congrats on the A, though. I'm willing to bet this is gonna be a darn good lecture.
Thanks for uploading this Cheesey. Was a good listen. And good to read at the end that it seems to have had a positive result for some people.
I just gave it a listen, and I have to say well done, Cheese. As for the students you mention at the end, I'd say that's a step in the right direction. Thank you for doing this.
Is always fun for a zoo to be on a psychologist or sexology class and see the topic of zoophilia been discussed by a smart teacher.♫I have talked to people that took class like that to hear what the reaction of the normal people was, they even made the class to look at porn videos as homework.
just listen to the report and it was both informative and well read. and yes your voice maches your body and thank you its so nice to hear it. a 10 form me

Wow! Congratulations on a job well done (despite the self-deprecation.. ) A good presentation that obviously had some positive results... Oh, and I very much agree with Aqua that your voice matches your face & your body...which makes them all an attractive match! Lucky Mr. Z! Thanks for sharing!
