We just aquired a young Lab/Pit mix. Very nice demeanor. Well behaved about 6 months old. We are wondering about when is it a good time to start training him? Licking and mounting... if its different for each please let us know.
Generally, it's advised to hold off on sex (mounting, etc.) to the 18 month mark, to allow for them to mature completely, physically and mentally. But, that doesn't mean you don't have anything to do for the next year... Take a look at This thread for an outline of things you could/should start on now.Have fun
I agree with sarx, he is still a bit young.
I suppose I should specify that we would like to know when its ok to start training him to lick her and not her lick him.
I assumed you meant him licking her... If he's not nippy or anything, I don't see why it wouldn't be alright to let him start licking... Personally I'd avoid using any sort of spread like peanut butter, because they could get dependant on it, etc... Just give lots of praise whenever he does lick (and honestly, holding off on having a shower or bath for a day or two can really help with getting him interested... Freshly washed crotch isn't interesting at all, especially considering dogs work so heavily on scent).
Thank you for the information. We are considering the situation... and discussing the possibilities. Thank you very much. Sean and Liz
If the dog is interested enough, he will lick you without aid/ training. Don't use peanut butter. As far as training now, get all the basic training down. Sit, stay, all that good stuff. And then onto bomb proofing, which is described in the link Sarx posted.
