Hi there, hope this doesn't sound like a too stupid question!Well my rott is going to have his 5th birthday in 2 weeks and I've noticed that he's getting some grey hairs around his muzzle. I don't realy care that he's getting some grey hairs, I would love him just as much even if he would be fluorescent green with orange markings (hmmm sounds kinda cool )!It's just that I'm wondering if he's realy becomming an old geaser or is it quite normal for big dogs (Rottweiler, big mothaf**ker ) to have some grey hairs when they're 5. I think most Rottweiler can become 8 quite easily although you can always have the sky fall down on you and see that your dog's ill Hope you guys can help me out!

Amira,my cutie,has got some grey hairs,too,on her chin and on her back behind the shoulders.She's not a big dog.I guess it's normal considering that she is probably 8 years old.My grandmother's dog -a setter mix- wasn't grey at the age of 11,but then he suddenly became grey in just one year (he was 17 when he died).I also know some large dogs in their prime age (4-6 years of age) with grey fur and a few of them look much older than their age

My sources say that life expectancy of a rottie is 10-12 years. So if you take good care of him (and I trust that you do), your companion should have more then half of his life ahead of him!

don't worry, some dogs go gray as early as 1 or 2!! rotties live until about 10 or 12 years on average as mentioned about. so don't worry about it ^_^;;

I have two Rotts. They will be 7 and 9 in April. The seven year old has gray on his chin but still acts like a puppy. The older one is still very energetic but is a bit slower. The key to keeping dogs in good health as they get older is keeping their weight in check.

early greying?? should be to much of a problem???remember the bigger the breed of dog the faster the seem to age((((seems ironic the best ones go the fastest.ive been blessed with 8 13 ys in most of my large breed dogs, all wer grey by then.the youngest i,ve lost one was guessed to be 7 she she a rott.dobie mix and was as healthy as a horse or appeared to be till the day she was found dead in her kennal with no signs of what took her from me it was assumed it was her heart or a anyrisum(sp) she had been completely normal the day before.my best shep fem was 13 and falling apart with health problems when i assisted her journy to the bridge.just keep her healthy and watc the wieght like the other who knw rotties beter said yo should have many more gra yrsi still have an older rott mix male whos at least 8 or 9 and has turned very grey iam told during my absence will see myself in a month or soHB58P.S. to the other rottie types have you ever heard of a gentic heart problem in rotties???or is this info i,ve been given bad??

Here is a chart I found and compared it with 3 others from different veterinary sources plus compared it with my own veterinary manuals. They are all the same and are for both Cats and Dogs. Unlike what had been thought for a long time, the ages between Cats/Dogs and Humans is not 3 to 1, 5 to 1, or even 7 to 1... they are as follows:Cat/Dog Years Human Years3 months.............5 yearsAdolescent6 months.............10 years1 year.................15 yearsProductive Years2 years................24 years3 years................28 years4 years................32 years5 years................36 years6 years................40 years7 years................44 yearsMiddle Age8 years................48 years9 years................52 years10 years..............56 years11 years..............60 yearsSenior Citizen12 years..............64 years13 years..............68 years14 years..............72 years15 years..............76 yearsElderly16 years..............80 years17 years..............84 years18 years..............88 years19 years..............92 yearsExtremely Elderly20 years..............96 years21 years..............100 yearsNote that smaller breeds will usually outlast larger breeds and it also depends on the diet, exercise, and other care that determines longevity.The avg expectancy of smaller breeds is between 14 to 20 years [15-16 respectively] while larger breeds avg 11 to 15 years [11-13 respectively]I hope that has helped
