Strange question I know, but some friends of mine have a dog that seems to have developed a sense of humor. The best example I can give is that when they visit their friends and take their dog with them he will play what looks like a practical joke on the friends dog. He will wait until the friends dog is not looking and will remove one of the toys and hide it out in the garden. When the other dog realizes that one of his toys is missing he goes looking for it, at which point another of the toys is taken and hidden. It's very funny to watch and the owners are adamant that they have not taught or encouraged this behavior. Is this a sense of humor based on teasing or just plain old play?

Yes, most certainly...I've seen many instances where dogs will play tricks on each other or on other people.

For sure. I was at a Fred Meyers store a while back and saw one having his fun.I would have been his next victim if I had not seen it happen to someone else. Imagine a Black Lab in the bed of a black truck. He's hunkered down so all you might see is the top of his head. As a person walks beside the truck, He jumps up and lets out a mighty WOOF. The poor victim freaks out! The dog hunkers down again ( with a big grin on his face ) and waits for the next sucker to walk by.

Yes indeed they do, I rember working at a shelter and a stunning shepherd named Indy HATED small children & animals. One day I was cleaning the cat's area out and could see a small child going about outting his fingers in the bars etc well she must have heard because she went into the inside part of her kennel and hid. The kid soon came around to her kennel and as usual finegrs in bars calling the dog's name, I can tell you now I have never seen anything so funny she shot right out at the small child barking and snarling loudley, The poor kid fell back crying his little heart out and she trotted around her pen as though she was proud for herself.

the more intelligent the animal, the better their sense of humor usually, the exception goes to animals that don't interact much with people. Sadly, in my job I see a lot of poor dogs chained up and ignored, these dogs, like people who don't socialize much when they are young don't usually develop much of a sense of humor, but there isn't a lot to laugh about when you are abused and neglected. My husband says I am odd, but I tend to judge people on how their animals behave a smiling friendly dog, who likes people is sure sign of a good person in my book.I once had a chow puppy (maybe 4 months old) I had never seen before walk up to me and roll over, not cowering, just wanting a good belly rub, he was so cute, I liked his owner before I ever spoke to the guy.

So true we have six mixed breed dogs and they are always cutting up just like kids per my wife. Her favorite sits up and smiles at her to get her belly scratched, but then swats at her with both feet if she is ignored. She will only let you catch one of the two feet like a game of keep away. Her sister is constantly stealing something from one of the others behind their back and hiding that object. Then she will get over by me like she hasn't done anything.

Heh, I'd have to agree with the consensus... my dog does that type of stuff all the time. Especially when she is trying to get another dog/person to play with her Not only that, she also gets frustrated when I am teasing her. She isn't really that vocal, but will growl/bark if I tease her enough... Sometimes she will do things that I laugh at when playing... yea, some things she might not do on purpose but nonetheless still funny

Kaiser likes to tease with his tennis ball - the game for him isnt throwing and chasing it, its bringing it back to you and chewing it right AT your hand, just waiting for you to try to take it, then he pulls he head away, and brings it straight back for another try! My chickens, whenever I'm squatting doing a job or something, they run up and peck my builder's bum, but by the time I've turned round to find the culprit, they're gone! I used to have a goat that liked to bite and tug on my jeans then run off and you could almost hear the giggling...shetland ponies...you could never accuse those guys of not haing a sense of humour!! They are total hedonists...

Absolutely! If you've ever been in a household that has both dogs and cats, you will see that cats like nothing more than smacking a sleeping dog, then jumping up somewhere high that the dog can't reach.

Hmmmmmmmmm,I'd say yes, afterall there is the Laughing Hiena. While they may not have as a defined,(weird) sense of humor as we humans, just spend time in a stabble or with your k9 and your likely to see it. You ever watched some of those animal clips on AFV or other such programs? Besides that, you'd have to agree that our domestic animals must have a good sense of humor, afterall they have to put up with our "nonsense"don't they?

Absolutely!!! They have a sense of humor. My German Shepherds play tricks on us and on each other, and just generally love to play almost any time. They absolutely LOVE to play hide and seek, whether its them hiding and jumping out to surprise us and nip us and then hauling ass, or bringing us toys to throw or to hide so they can look for it. And the male loves to carry off one of your shoes and hide it from you.The male will sometimes jump on the bed when you get up for some reason, and then lay down in your place and wait for you to come back in the room. He'll hunker down as low as he can get and try to hide in the covers, then when you come back in and catch him in bed, and fuss at him, he acts silly & rolls on the bed or he'll take off running off the bed and do a couple of high-speed laps around the room and across the bed. And he's smart enough to know when you're in a bad mood or don't feel good, and won't do stuff to irritate you. My sister's cockatoo would get near the kitchen and then to do a perfect imitation of the clanking of the can opener and then of her calling the cats to be fed. When the cats would come trotting around the corner headed to the kitchen, the cockatoo would then imitate their big Lab and would bark like crazy at them, scare the hell out of them, and they would run like crazy out of the room. Then the cockatoo would bob his head and screech like crazy, make laughing sounds, and would sometimes even say "Stupid cats!".That bird used to love to catch the cats sleeping and dive bomb them, or drop things on them. He was constantly scheming and conniving his next trick to play on somebody. Our dogs are so conniving that I tell folks to "Beware of Smiling Dogs" at my house.

Oh most certainly. But also its much like humans. I forgot who said it (sorry!) but like people, some do, and some don't.I've heard of dogs appearing to laugh, and I've seen them smile at some things. No doubt when we trip over something and fall, they think it's pretty funny. Especially when they trip us!

Our Great Dane was taught that even without a fence in the front yard, he was not allowed to leave the yard unless he is on a leash. Our neighbors cat walked by one day when Nikko was sitting like a statue by the sidewalk. I guess the cat thought it was a statue until he was right next to Nikko and he moved his head to watch the cat. That cat jumped about a foot in the air and took off. Nikko just sat and watched the cat running for no reason. After that day, the cat would sneak along the sidewalk until he got to our yard and would race passed. Nikko would trot to the edge of the sidewalk, but never ran aggressively towards the cat. It was fun watching this cat teasing Nikko and all Nikko ever wanted was for the cat to stop and play with him. There was another cat in that home and I think it was daring this cat to run by the Great Dane!!

I once had a saddle horse that did this. It was a really hot day . When we came into his stall, I washed his ears , face and nose with cold water , I thought it would cool him off a bit. He didn't particularly enjoy it. I bent down to check his front feet , and he got a full mouth of cold water from the trough and dumped it on my head. Then stared at me.

All the animals I've ever been around had a definite sense of "play", and I think sometimes they do develop a sense of humour too. I was working on a dairy a while ago, and while cleaning out the freestalls where the heifers were kept I would leave the shovel at the end gate to go and make sure that none of the heifers got stuck between the divider and the floor scraper as it passed underneath. One of the heifers would go and start playing with the shovel, and I would run back to chase her away from it so it wouldn't get knocked into the manure. It all started out innocently enough, but after the first few times I noticed that the heifer would stand there and watch until I was far enough away from the shovel, then she'd run over to it, slime the whole handle and knock it over, and then go bounding away before I could get there with a look of glee on her face. She seemed dissapointed when I started leaving the shovel outside of the gate where she couldn't reach it. I've also had heifers steal rags that were hanging out of my pocket and go running away with them, they made quite a game out of teasing me with it when I tried to get it back. They'd wait until I was just about in reach and then go running away again. I got alot of exercise

Animals def have a sense of play..and they can 'plan ahead' as well. I'm not sure if it's strictly 'humour'..from THEIR point of view..but it's often funny to US I recall once watching my friends old gelding..he noticed his bull-terrier bitch asleep in the paddock. The horse walked up very quietly..bent down and sniifed quietly. Then he backed up..and reached out with one fore foot and VERY slowly and deliberatly pushed down on dogs tail with his hoof. He then galloped off down paddock with head and tail high as dog lept to feet and looked around in surprise. It wasn't accidental..it was all very delibrate and planned on the geldings part. I've seen the same dog and horse playing 'ball'..the dog would bring her ball up in mouth, drop it under horse's belly while he was eating, and horse would kick ball away for dog to chase. This would go on as long as dog had ball, and the horse was eating. I've also seen the same gelding let my friends other dog have a good lick at his dropped penis after urinating. Sure wish I'd had my camera handy then
