Just curious, where did everyone acquire their animals?I got my male malamute from a friend that was moving away and couldn't bring him with her.
That's easy. I volunteer at an animal shelter and got them as puppies.
I imagine this is better suited for the zoo section

Rescued my girl from the dog shelter, but she was already grown up!
My beautiful little bay gelding was given to me by the owners of the barn I used to work at as a "going away" gift since I'd bonded with him so much and I was moving away.
mINE WAS A STRAY WHO I'M CURRENTLY TKING CARE OF...OR TRYING TO ANYWAY
One bought from the breeder at age 8 weeks after being in a wait list for over a year, the other found as a result of a newspaper ad when she was 3 years old. I love them both equally
From a breeder here in town...
was family pet- - -long long long ago! himfella
A couple I got from breeders, but most of mine have come through adoption, or rescue. I've successfully introduced animals that some people couldn't keep anymore into my family and they are much happier for it, some lived in small cramped kennels and now have free range of the house and a very large pen, probably an acre in size.
I got mine from a poster I saw in the advert after the family had to gice him up because they were moving and he was very domiant towards the kids and actually would pin the four year old down bite her neck (I saw the scars ) and hump her well the youngest in my house was only a year younge rthan me so he suited us fine and now lives happily very spoilt.

I found my boy on Craigslist. He was dumped in a junkyard at about 6 weeks of age and had been fostered by a great lady who does a rescue out of her home. I love him.
QUOTE (secretidentity @ Jul 1 2007, 04:58 PM)Just curious, where did everyone acquire their animals?I got a male Black Lab from a family in my local area who were giving away lab puppies. I took over care of a Dalmatian from my best friend when she and her hubby were forced to relocate. They have since resettled and took back the Dalmatian.
got two from a breeder one from a shelter and the other three were from people dumping them .all females .
mine was from a classifieds page, he was too big for them. guess they dont like big dogs ?!

My Doberman came from a family who could not stop her from chewing things up. I found my golden retreiver more dead than alive in the blizzard of '78. She was banished from her former home after being caught inflagrante with one of the human members and they blamed her.My Belgian sheperd was given to me because her owner wasn't around enough to give her companionship and she suffered from intense separation anxiety. My first great dane was given to me by a breeder because she had what is called a standoff coat. I bought both of my other Danes as litter mates at four weeks of age because their mother could not take care of them because of mastitis. I bought my potbelly from a breeder. I got my two St. Bernard Great Pyranese crosses from a family who was giving pups away.LTD
Im new to all of this, actively looking for the right man with the right dog, so it can become comfortable, and convenient for all. seems all the good ones are in TX!! Im in So Cal.

My first Black Labrador I purchased from a registered breeder and brought her up in my then, one man unit. She was about 2 years old when I met a young lady who had a dog Black Labrador and fortunately our feelings towards animals sharing our lives to the full were the same. The 2 dogs were eventually mated, once for the sale of the puppies and secondly to continue the line of Black Labs in our family group. I adopted one of the females and my partner one of the males. Some years later I had the good fortune to meet another lady who had had an ongoing relationship with her own Black Lab for some time and naturally we clicked, the first relationship had ceased amicably, we are still friends. Much later, a lady who knew both my previous partner and myself as animal lifestyle sharers joined me until her untimely death nearly 4 years ago.It has been a wonderful life experience to share with not only other humans but to include the dogs in nearly everything that myself, my partners and our children wanted to do! They were after all, family pets!Pokerman

well my first three K9 lovers were all family pets - one given to us by a forester who had to retire, one from the breeder and one from a vet who somehow acquired him as a puppy in dodgy circumstances and needed to rehome him. now i have my Kaiser, I picked him at the local shelter after having NO luck going through all the classifieds, the people were always messing me around and finally i just went to the shelter...and there he was!
